Francesco
Mariano

Multimedia artist, electroacoustic composer, researcher, lecturer

I compose with sound, write code, teach how to listen. Technology is a tool for composition, teaching and research: from data sonification to Progressive Web Apps, from computer music to intangible sound heritage, all the way to artificial intelligence applied to the humanities.

Active research lines

Five active research strands on composition, sonification, cultural heritage and sound pedagogy. Each line produces scientific contributions, works and public tools.

Sonification of sacred texts

ITSERR / UNIMORE / FSCIRE (PNRR)

Research on the transformation of religious textual corpora into composable sonic material through generative AI, semantic analysis and audio synthesis. Explores the relationship between sacred word, computational reading and critical listening.

Soundscape Annotation

Personal research, open source

A research ecosystem that brings human listening and machine listening into dialogue. A computational soundscape analysis toolkit (technical metrics, ecoacoustic indices, semantic classification, critical narrative) and a first-hand annotation PWA with a 128-term controlled vocabulary feed an iterative six-stage teaching workflow, formalised in a working paper with a validation case study.

Earth Observation data sonification

ESA Frascati / Master in Sonic Arts, University of Rome Tor Vergata

An interactive audiovisual composition that sonifies Copernicus satellite imagery and climate data from 1950 to today (temperature, CO₂, Arctic ice, sea level). Granular synthesis, harmonic drones, Schumann resonance at 7.83 Hz, GLSL shaders. Five execution modes, from the browser to live performance.

Intangible sound heritage, Villa Ficana

Villa Ficana Ecomuseum, Macerata - OZ Association - Marche Region

Documentation, restitution and composition of the soundscape of the rammed-earth village. From the sound mapping workshop, held within the "Trame di Borghi" project funded by the Marche Region and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, emerged a georeferenced audio archive, two PWAs providing public access to the sound heritage and a network of contributions from local communities. A research practice between ethnomusicology, ear training and intangible heritage.

Ear training and sound pedagogy

G.B. Martini Conservatory of Bologna - Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata

Pedagogical research and development of teaching tools for ear training, electroacoustic composition and interaction design. I bring the teaching PWAs into the courses I teach as experimentation materials, where they become research artefacts in dialogue with Italian higher arts education (AFAM).

Publications and contributions

Essays, technical handbooks and contributions to scientific contexts on electroacoustic composition, ecoacoustics and sonification.

2026 Working paper / Methodology paper

Soundscape Annotation: Iterative Workflow, Interpretive Stratification and Audio Analysis Skill Calibration in AFAM Higher Education

Methodology paper on the Soundscape Annotation project, conducted at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Macerata, A.Y. 2025-2026. Describes an iterative six-stage workflow for soundscape annotation and analysis in AFAM higher-education teaching, formalises three open-source software artefacts (Python skill soundscape-audio-analysis, companion PWA soundscape-annotation-atelier, first-hand PDF worksheet) and documents an end-to-end validation case study. Published on Zenodo, CC BY 4.0. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20282496.

2026 Scientific contribution

From Text to Sound

Talk at the ITSERR / RESILIENCE Superseminar (Reggio Emilia) on the sonification of sacred texts, presented within the collaboration with ITSERR / UNIMORE / FSCIRE (PNRR). Investigates the translation of text into sound as a practice of computational reading and critical listening. Superseminar programme (PDF).

2020 Musicological essay

Air Piece. From Ecoacoustics to Sound Fantasy

A study on contemporary sound art with an analysis of John Heineman's work for the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Cited by the Isabella Scelsi Foundation.

ISBN 978 0244 56039 3

Interactive multimedia tools
